CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Emma sat at her dressing mirror, watching Mary put the finishing touches on her hair. She smoothed the surface of the elaborate white silk gown and adjusted the lay of the plunging bodice. It was a beautiful gown. Only one of the five that had appeared in the many deliveries of finery from Madame Monique’s, Miss Armesty’s Millinery Shoppe, and the cobbler’s. As the week wore on, Emma felt awash in a sea of silk and chintz and feathers and bows. She and Mary had giggled like schoolgirls at each arrival.

She felt pampered and spoiled beyond reason. Each day she thanked Giles for whatever extravagance had been delivered. He seemed to take great pleasure in her daily exuberant expressions of gratitude. He took even more pleasure in hearing her exuberant expressions of passion each night. And Emma considered that not even a mountain of the finest silks could compare to the sensuous feel of his hands on her body, the glorious explosion as his agonizingly slow ministrations brought her to climax, and the incredible peace of being wrapped in his arms. If he had not a penny, if he were that humble butcher in the nearby village, she would still have no greater wish than to be where she was: in his bed.

A bright flush rose from Emma’s chest as she recalled the nights of the past week. Heat seared her cheeks as she caught Mary’s eye in the mirror. The girl merely smiled back. A quick tap on the door signaled Giles’s arrival. Mary gave a quick curtsy, and Emma fanned herself to dispel some of the bright color brought on by wicked remembrances. The reflection of Giles in his immaculate formal dress, tailored to perfection and showing off his tall, impressive physique did nothing to ward off her already salacious musings. Even now, she imagined him out of those clothes and covering her body with his.

“The white one is lovely,” Giles began as he regarded her reflection in her dressing mirror. “This is perfect,” Giles murmured into the hair piled on her head as he slipped a hand down onto her bare upper chest, skimmed over the subtle mounds of her breasts, and traced the neckline of the garment from one shoulder to the other.

“You approve of the neckline, then?” Emma asked. “It is quite low.”

Giles grinned at her in the mirror. “The neckline? Yes, that is perfect as well.”

Emma stifled a gasp as she comprehended his meaning. She looked up into the reflection of twinkling eyes.

Giles pulled a sizeable grey velvet box from the inside of his tailcoat. He reached over Emma’s shoulder and handed her the box. “For you to wear tonight.”

Emma flipped the lid, and the sight of the contents made her dizzy. She threw her hand up to her mouth as she swayed slightly in her seat. She ran her fingers over the dazzling array of bright-blue sapphires ringed with diamonds. These were surely the jewels of a queen. She could not imagine that she would ever wear such a thing.
